How to Setup a Sub Domain on a Blogger Custom Domain Blog

Add Sub domain on a Blogger Custom Domain

This tutorial is for all those who are already using Custom Domains with Blogger. If you already have a blogger blog at some Custom domain like www.yourdomain.com , then you might want to add a sub domains to this custom domain like blog.yourdomain.com gallery.yourdomain.com etc. An example of such a sub-domain is bloggertemplates.bloggerplugins.org It is a blogger powered blog, which i created on the sub-domain. In order to create blogs at sub-domains, you need to create CNAME records for the same.

Create Sub Domain on a Blogger Custom Domain

Here we will learn how we can add a new sub domain to your blogger custom domain blog. As an example we will learn how to create a sub domain blog.yourdomain.com to your custom domain blog. (If you have need some other sub-domain change blog with what you want). To do that we need to create a CNAME record.

1. blog.yourdomain.com pointing to ghs.google.com

If you are having a self hosted website, then you will have to create this CNAME Record with your Web Host. You might be able to do it from the “Simple DNS Zone Editor” in most cPanels. If you don’t have such an option, contact your Web Host and ask them to create these two CNAME records for you. After creating this record with your webhost(and after it has propagated), publish your BlogSpot blog to that sub domain(Skip the tutorials for CNAME Creation on Different domain Registrars. They are not applicable for Self hosted Websites)

If you don’t have a self hosted  website, then to create the CNAME you need to login to your domain control panel. Different Registrars have different interfaces(we have listed 4 of them here) but the basic thing is that you need to create the CNAME Record. If you bought the domain via blogger, then you have to first login to Google APPS to get into your Domain Control panel

If you bought the domain from Blogger

If you bought the domain from within Blogger, then you have to get into your domain control panel. To do that go to

http://google.com/a/cpanel/yourdomain.com

you will have to replace yourdomain.com with your domain name. From the Google APPS dashboard, Go to Domain Settings > Domain Names and click on Advanced DNS Settings. From the new page, Sign in to DNS Console(of Enom or Godaddy with the username and password that you get from here.)

CNAME Creation on Different Registrars

1. Creating  CNAME on Enom

1.Login to your Enom account(If you signed in from Google APPS, you can directly proceed to sep 4)

2.From the drop-down menu at the Domains tab, select My Domain and you will be directed to the Manage Domains  page.

3.Click on your domain name

4.To add a CNAME record, click NEW ROW.

5.Enter blog as Host Name , ghs.google.com  as Address  and CNAME as Record Type

Creating CNAME on Enom

2. Creating  CNAME on Godaddy

Godaddy has come up with a simple  Tool which will automatically create the CNAME records for you. So if you are on Godaddy just Go to this Go Daddy tool

bloggergodaddy[3]

Enter your Subdomain name there e.g. : blog.yourdomain.com

(Use the correct sub-domain where you want your blog to appear) and click on the Confirm Button. The CNAME Records have been created for you automatically.

3. Creating  CNAME on Name.com

1. Login to your Name Account

2.Click on  Account and then on your Domain name

3.Click on DNS Management form the Right Sidebar and add the details as shown in the screenshot and Submit

Creating CNAME on Name.com

4. Creating  CNAME on Namecheap.com

1. Login to your Namecheap account and click on your domain name.

2.From the Left Sidebar, Click on All Host Records

3.Add the Records as shown in the Screen shot

Creating CNAME on Namecheap.com

Switching your BlogSpot blog to the Custom Sub-Domain

I assume that you have already have a blog which you want to switch to the custom-sub domain. Get into its Dashboard and navigate to Settings > Add Custom Domain and click on the link saying “Already own a domain? Switch to advanced settings” Now provide the URL blog.yourdomain.com . Type the captcha and save the Settings.

  14. @Lexmax_ONE - which domain and sub-domain are you talking of?
Did you create the CNAME Records? If so it may take some time for the DNS changes to take effect. I can't help you without knowing your domain and subdomain urls.

    ReplyDelete
  16. @Dzignine - i am not familiar with the Cpanel of everyDNS. If it is impossible to create the second CNAME, then don't create. You willl be able to set your blogger blog at blog.yourdomain.com If someone types in www.blog.yourdomain.com , then they will not see your blog. thats all. nobody will normally type that url into the browser. :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. this is great info. I am having one problem. My domain is kennyfriedman.com, I have that working and pointting to blog.kennyfriedman.com but when someone use www e.g. www,kennyfriedman.com I get a 404 error. I'm using godaddy.

    awesome site here

    ReplyDelete
  33. @kenny - blogger has introduced the redirection option to help people in redirecting the non-www version of the url to the www version. ie like (kennyfriedman.com -- > www.kennyfriedman.com)

You are having a different kind of setup and you wont be able to redirect www.kennyfriedman.com to blog.kennyfriedman.com using normal blogger redirection methods.

But you still might be able to do this if you delete that CNAME record for www pointing to ghs.google.com . After you delete that, you can use the Godaddy Free hosting to Setup a redirect. (Or you may try out the Godaddy Domain Forwarding.. I don't know if it will work as i no longer have a godaddy account)

  34. I was looking for a way to get my naked-subdomain (subdomain.domain.com) pointing to my custom domain. But I am now stuck, I can't tell how to make both www.subdomain.domain.com and subdomain.domain.com work the same way.

Can you give me a hint where to look?

    ReplyDelete
  35. Thanks so much Aneesh - this worked perfectly. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  36. @nichive- point both of them to ghs.google.com via CNAME refferals. Now you can publish to subdomain.domain.com and then check the redirection option in your Publishing Settings

    http://www.bloggerplugins.org/2009/08/blogger-custom-domain-on-godaddy.html
You need to create one CNAME and 4 A Records to setup a Blogger Custom Domain. Instead you are using some Redirection or Forwarding option.

  48. That is for blogger blogs. I have a domain-name(eg: mysite.com)setup for blogger. Now, is it possible to create sub-domain like store.mysite.com and use it for site other than blogger, like wordpress or any website? I bought domain name from local registrar.

    ReplyDelete
  49. @nima - yes it is possible. you will need to purchase a hosting account from some host like HostGator . By default your domain name will be using your domain registrar's NameServers. You will have to change the Name Servers of your Blogger Domain to that of your host.Doing this will make all the current records created on your Domain Control panel ineffective. So you will have to recreate all these records on your host. you will have to recreate the CNAME and 4 A Records(you are already using blogger. so i hope that you know of it) on the new Host from the "Simple DNS Zone Edior" in your Hosting cPanel. If you are using Google APPs on your domain, then you will need to re create the CNAME records for that as well.

and btw this is how my blog works. www.bloggerplugins.org is a blogger blog. forums.bloggerplugins.org is a bbPress installation on my host.

    ReplyDelete
  50. how to do same for basicnetworks.net please help me

    ReplyDelete
  51. @download - there are thousands of domain registrars on the web each with a different panel. I haven't used that registrar and so isn't familiar with it. you will need to create the 2 CNAME Records. Contact their support/forums help with creating the CNAME records.

If you are having a self hosted website, and you want to add blogger on it's subdomain, then you might be able to create the CNAMEs from the "Simple DNS Zone Editor"(present it most cPanels) in the hosting cPanel

And one thing more... can I use blogger sub domain in wordpress..??? For eg. Lets say my main domain www.techboyarena.com is hosted on blogger and if i create a new subdomain like blog.techboyarena.com now can I use my this sub domain in wordpress or any other hosting site or not....??????

  54. Hi Aneesh please be kind enough to verify the steps i taken are valid

1.already have created a blog and using with custom domain and its anuradha.eu as instructed i have added www cname and its working fine .
2.apart from my main blog i would like to creat a second blog and use a sub domain from my main domain for example blog.anuradha.eu

my question is do i first create the sub domain blog.anuradha.eu then follow your instructions by adding cnames blog & www.blog

    Many Thanks in advance

    ReplyDelete
  55. @Ripslasher - Don't create any Sub-domains on your Godaddy Account. Just create the 2 CNAME records as mentioned here in the tutorial.(DNS changes can take time to propagate).
Btw you didn't create the 4 A Records. Refer http://www.bloggerplugins.org/2009/08/blogger-custom-domain-on-godaddy.html

The question is : if i used "myblog.blogspot.com" for 2 months, i've shared the link everywhere i could. IF i buy a domain "myblog.com", what happens when someone enters on the link "myblog.blogspot.com", will this link become a dead link or not ? I'm not sure if you understood what i've said. Is a little hard for me to explain this more accurately.

    ReplyDelete
  75. @Piscean - as i said before, you are on the wrong post. This post deals with creating a subdomain(but both are similar).

I'm assuming that you need the new blog at your thedailyhowtos.com and www.thedailyhowtos.com .As per the screenshot, you just need an additional CNAME with the following set of values
    www , ghs.google.com , CNAME(Alias)
Add this row and you are done with the CNAME settings. It may take time to take effect. You can check if it has been reflected using CNAME lookup tools(that too will take time). Once you are done switch your blog to www.thedailyhowtos.com (you can find info about that in the other tutorials that i mentioned)

  76. Aneesh thanx alot.May ALLAH bless you

    ReplyDelete
  77. Aneesh, Thanks for taking pains and trying to help everybody. Hats off to your high 'humanity index. :)
But I have a few doubts and questions. You see I own the website http://www.freelancewriter.co/ created on and through GoDaddy. I also created a blogger blog http://writing-freelance.blogspot.com/. I wanted this blog to supplement my main site. Then I thought of creating a subdomain on my main site domain, and redirected/forwarded that to the blogger blog.
    Now, the implications were:
    1) When I go to the blog through my subdomain http://blog.freelancewriter.co/ and view the pages, I do not see the page names on the address bar (I think I used masking), I just see the above mentioned link, no matter what page I view.
    2) If I do not use masking, then I see the blogger URL, with the pages, but I want my subdomain URL to show on the address bar with the pages.
    3) My subdomain carries the same Alexa rating as that of my main site; whereas, my blogger blog URL shows a different Alexa rating (I had submitted the blogger blog as separate entity in Alexa. And both, the main site and blogger blog are separate on my webmaster tool.)
Aneesh, I want to know is it the right thing to do. I hope it does not hurt the SEO and the main site ranking. Somewhere I read that having subdirectory is better than having a subdomain for a blog, as then the main site benefits from the blog links. Otherwise a subdomain is treated as a completely new website.
I hope Google does not take it as two website sharing the same content, which would mean 'content duplication', and that would be very harmful.
Now, in my case, the blogger blog has (and is accessible) by its own URL as well as through my main site subdomain. Do I benefit in this way in terms of SEO and linking, or I am at a loss? Do I need to setup my subdomain on the blogger blog, or let it remain as it is? If one can forward, then why setup?
My subdomain doesn't have the 'www'.
I hope you understood my problem, as I'm confused myself.
    Can you help, Aneesh?
    Thanks in advance :)

    ReplyDelete
  78. @Harleena Singh
1)you know the reason for this. you are using masking and its not the right way to setup a subdomain
2)you haven't followed the steps mentioned in this tutorial
you need to create 2 CNAME records on Godaddy, stop the masking, and then switch your blogspot blog to that address using the Settings > Publishing tab.
3)you can't have a blogger blog on a sub-directory. The only way is to use a sub-domain or use the main domain.Once you are done with the steps mentioned here, your old blogspot blog will be 301 redirected to the corresponding page on the new subdoman.Your old blogspot urls will get deindexed from google, and the new sub-domained urls will get indexed. So there is no point of duplicate content unless, you make the same post somewhere else.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Thanks for your reply Aneesh. I think I am not going to setup my sub-domain for my blogspot blog now, as it is climbing high on Alexa (reached from 21 million to 2 million in about a month), and I'll be losing the ranking if the pages get de-indexed. Right? Do you think is there any probability of reaching the 100,000 mark in alexa at this rate?

    ReplyDelete
  88. My dns settings are with Verio, and for some reason I must use ghs.l.google.com, or Verio will throw an error.

I had to set both CNAME records accordingly, and wait a couple of days.

When changing the site from "myblog".blogger.com to the subdomain on my domain, I again had to wait. The change was not instantaneous.

Everything I read seemed to suggest it should all work just after publishing to my subdomain, but for me, at least, it did not.

Hope my experiences help someone else, and thanks!

  94. This is a very good solution for a Blogger feature that I've never been pleased with. My Blogger site is hosted on a custom domain and I like using Blogger except for "Pages". When I created my first page I was disappointed having to work within the same template as the home page. I didn't want to throw out the style but frustrated that I couldn't change the layout, remove or replace without affecting every other page. I think I'm going to try this out with 1 or 2 sub-domains and experiment a little by using one as a page developer platform. You've got me thinking again, Thanks. Good stuff! Watch for changes. pcfarming.com

  96. @Fakhrul -
blog.fakhrulzakry.com has an "A" record pointing to "112.137.167.244"
delete that and create a "CNAME" record for "blog.fakhrulzakry.com" pointing to "ghs.google.com"

DNS changes will take time to propogate. Check the redirection option in Blogger Publishing settings. For now your blog is available at www.blog.fakhrulzakry.com

  97. Hi Aneesh,
As similar to what you had mentioned for @Fakhrul comment above....
    Just for a clear desc..
    WHat I want to do..
1.I have hegdekiran.blogspot.com hosted on custom domain www.hegdekiran.com
    2. I want to host a new blog say - kiranjava.blogspot.com at "Sub-domain" --> jee.hegdekiran.com..

    Hopefully this is possible..
I was refering your above post but the interface seem to have changed.. Additionally I was referring to http://help.securepaynet.net/article/4080?prog_id=412956#bounce

    Can you please suggest?

  99. Hello. I have a custom domain hosted at blogger, but i want to create a subdomain with a forum hosted on another hosting company, so how can i do that ??

    ReplyDelete
  100. @Anturaju Daniel - change the nameservers of your domain to that of your hosting. Now you will be able to create any number of sub-domains (if your host permits). Now if you want the domain root to map to your blogger blog, then create a CNAME record for www pointing to ghs.google.com
also create 4 A records for
    yourdomain.com 216.239.32.21
    yourdomain.com 216.239.34.21
    yourdomain.com 216.239.36.21
    yourdomain.com 216.239.38.21

  101. If I'm reading this correct...you can't setup a blogger to direct just to the subdomain and have the main domain behave separate with no Google records. The main domain needs the 4 A Records and the sub needs the additional CNAME? I was trying to send my blogspot to JUST the sub and use my main .com as normal.

    Thanks

    Dan

  102. Hi Aneesh
    Kindly clarify this for me.

I own www.superstar-rajni.com and I use blogger. I wish to add a page and want the URL to be a sub-domain name (like movies.superstar-rajni.com) in the same blog.

    How do I do it?

    Regards,
    Admin
    Superstar-rajni.com

  106. Hi Aneesh, I have my custom domain with blogger. I followed your instructions and setup the 2 CNAME records on enom (say, blog.mydomain.com and www.blog.mydomain.com).

The problem is that when I add the subdomain(blog.mydomain.com) as the new address on a 2nd blog on blogger, it also tries to redirect my domain naked url(mydomain.com) to it.
So the 2nd blog address settings shows like this:

    http://blog.mydomain.com
    [ ] redirect mydomain.com to blog.mydomain.com

I've tried unchecking the redirect option on the second blog but then redirecting turns off on both blogs disabling the naked URL(mydomain.com) completely.

Could you give some advice to fix this?
    Thank you.

  107. @jon cassidy - thank you so much for the kind words :-)
@Davo - this thing is totally strange.. what are your Blog URLS?
And what does the redirect option in the second blog's dashboard read like?

    ReplyDelete
  108. @Davo - Blogger no longer permits you to redirect the www sub domain to the non-www version. So you can't use that redirect option unless you are publishing to www.blog.yourdomain.com

  117. So if we have to create 5 sub-domains then we should first create 5 different blogs in Blogger and point each to the separate sub-domains. right? Please suggest urgently as i need to create sub-domains. Thanks in advance buddy.

  118. Hey thanks.. It's very easy but I was confused, you really helped me. I have just created subdomain on my blog and hosted it on blogger.. :)

  119. Once you create the subdomain to use on a Blogger website, will this domain appear like most subdomains that top websites like Yahoo and MSN use? For example, "Wonderwall.msn.com" or "OMG.yahoo.com" are two popular subdomains that operate under the main websites.

Wonderwall.com is pointing to the subdomain, as is OMG.com. If I create a subdomain, can I point a domain and publish content on the subdomain? I would to point the generic domain to a movie website. When I publish, I would like the articles to appear like moviename.---movies.com/top10movies/

    Thanks in advance.
