This tutorial will explain how you can set up Blogger on a domain which you bought via GoDaddy.I assume that you have already bought a domain from GoDaddy. Here are the detailed steps for configuring your Blogger Custom Domain with GoDaddy.
1.Login to this GoDaddy Tool

Enter your domain name there e.g.: www.bloggerplugins.org
2.Click on the confirm button and a CNAME record will be created for you and you will get a success Message saying that the DNS records were created

3. If you are publishing to your www domain, then that’s not sufficient. You will also have to create a set of 4 A Records.
To do that first login to your GoDaddy Account and go to DNS Manager

4. Now Click on Edit DNS Zone next to the domain name which you want to use as a blogger Custom Domain

5. You will see a record there under A(Host). Select it and delete it first

6. Now use the Quick Add button to create 4 A(Host) Records as shown in the below screenshot

In the host field you have to give @ and in the points to field, you have to give these IPs respectively
216.239.32.21216.239.34.21
216.239.36.21
216.239.38.21
(See the screenshot above to see how to input these values)
7. Now Click on the Save Zone File Button on the top right.

8. Confirm the modification by clicking on the OK button

Finally the Set of A(Host) Records should look like this :

You are done with GoDaddy Settings. Now you have to configure your Blogger Account to publish to this domain.
Publishing your BlogSpot blog to the Custom Domain
1.Login to your Blogger Dashboard and Navigate to Settings > Basic and click on the Add a custom domain link

2.Now Switch to advanced settings

3.Provide your Custom Domain URL and click the Save Button

4. Now Click on the Edit Link Once again

5.Now select the redirection Option and save the settings Once again

5. Now your blog should be visible at your new domain.
Adding Google APPS to your Godaddy Domain(Mail[yourname@yourdomain.com] , Calendar etc)
1.Once again go to the Godaddy Configuration Tool and key in the following URLs one by one and click on the Confirm button
mail.bloggerplugins.org
calendar.bloggerplugins.org
docs.bloggerplugins.org
sites.bloggerplugins.org
You will obviously have to replace bloggerplugins.org with your domain name while doing this.
2. Create MX records for that Domain using this Automatic Configuration Tool
3. Now Signup for Google APPS using this link
4.When you finish the signup process, you will be taken to the Google APPS dashboard. You might be asked to create a CNAME to verify your domain ownership.
In that case you should create a CNAME(Alias) Record with the following Details
Host: googlefffggghhh12345 [The one provided on your Google Apps dashboard for the verification purpose. This is just a sample string. You should use the one provided and not this sample string :)] This is the alias name.
Points To : google.com
You can add this Record in DNS Manager under CNAME(Alias) using the Quick Add button and don’t forget to Save the Zone File.
5.Once you have verified the ownership, you can access each of the Google Applications. You can also change them to custom URLs(that's why we created the CNAMES using the Godaddy tool in Step 1).You can change the URL of the mail application to mail.yourdomain.com(To do that Click on the APP and then Click on the Link Change URL)
There's a click missing between step 2 and 3; the Total DNS Control and MX is not on the page you have to click on another tab (forgotten which one).
ReplyDeleteAnd even though I have put in the 4 A names by copying and pasting the numbers from your page to avoid mistakes, and created the CName www ghs.google.com...... my blog didn't show up.
I had to delete an existing www @ before they allowed my to ass in the Cname under www
Will try again
Okay, I did it again, still no joy, but it might take time. I will wait a day or two.
ReplyDeleteThe tutorial was great, but left off too early. I am in the midst of setting up Google Apps but have no idea whether I should be setting up user accounts etc.I am not a business and i am just a single user. Is it safe to skip all this?
What IS google Apps for anyway?
@itshometome - your custom domain is now working perfectly at http://www.tampinescourt.net . (DNS changes would take time to propogate).
ReplyDeleteUse of Google APPs
The primary use of Google apps is that you can have your own custom email address like yourname@tampinescourt.net and you will be able to access and send emails from the Google Mail interface(like GMail)
one of my blogs got into problem , i don't know what it is , maybe it need some more time , anyway tnx for this article
ReplyDeleteHey, I have some queries.
ReplyDeleteam trying to map the godaddy domain to blogger. I did the CNAME changes on godaddy and the changes under publishing in blogger. But till yet I haven't made any changes to ARecords.
After this I checked on the site, all links like www.example, http://www.example, the blogger url are directing to my new domain... but example.com or http://example.com arn't.
so my questions are -
1. What's the use of changing the ARecords? (as its already taking the custom domain)
2. how do I make sure that example.com and http://example.com are also redirected to the custom domain. (I have already checked this option in blogger)
It's been 20 mins since I made these changes, shud I wait for more time?
@Vandana - 1. If you don't create the A Records, the URL example.com wont be mapping to Google Servers.
ReplyDelete2.So first Create the 4 A Records. Once these records are created and the Records are propagated, this URL will be mapping to the 4 Google Servers. Now if you select the Redirection option in Blogger Publishing Settings, blogger will automatically redirect the non www URLs to the www version of the same.(Don't forget to delete the default A Record)
Thanks Aneesh, On it!
ReplyDeleteI just bought a godaddy domain and followed all of your steps completely but when i refresh my site it still is not working. Its at a godaddy parked site. Any tips?
ReplyDelete@Nycole - the DNS propogation takes some time :) its working fine now.

ReplyDeletehow much i have to wait for the changes to take effect....i mean its not redirecting at the moment...

ReplyDeleteWorked like a charm. Changes took effect in a snap. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThere are already 4 Arecord entries, 3 CNAME & 3 MX entries. i purchased custom domain directly through blogger. Changed settings to redirect to custom domain in blogger publish settings. Purchased it today only. Still my blogspot does not redirect to new custom domain and all my old pages are also in blogspot. How long will it take to redirect to custom domain and will it happen automatically or do i have to do any other change in settings in godaddy. please please please help... Thanks in advance
ReplyDelete@CreativeMama- if you bought your domain from Blogger, then you don't have to change anything. :)

ReplyDeleteHi! I tried to enter the Host name: www and the Host name: ghs.google.com but I always get an error "Only one name can exist for the hostname www."
ReplyDeletePlease help. Thank you!
@KIRA - that means that a record already exists. You can delete that one and create the record as mentioned in the post. Or you can edit the existing record with those details.

I always come back here whenever I purchase a new domain for a blogger hosted blog. Your instructions are easy to comprehend and follow.
ReplyDeleteWhere I can find the link of "Total DNS Control and MX Records" I really cant find that link. Thank you
ReplyDeleteWill the pagerank of my blog remain the same. Also what about links left on other sites how will google now I have switched to another domain.
ReplyDeleteHey what if i should undo all these changes. I mean i now dont want this to be a custom domain of blogger. I want to create a site using wordpress or drupal. What should i do now?
ReplyDelete@arun - just change your name servers to that of your host.. no need to undo anything.
ReplyDeleteThanks Aneesh.... now i got into another trouble. I switched back to blogger custom domain itself. I was using without any problems. I added Adsense to my site. It asked me to save my adsense account number in CNAME as www and at Points to host as "pub-xxxxxxxxxx". I did so. Suddenly my site turned out to an advertisement site. My site is www.aruntuts.com.
ReplyDeleteI was shocked and re-enabled everything back to blogger custom domain as it is in this post. But while i tried to change the settings in blogger layout, it warned me that "Another blog or Google Site is already using this address."
What should i do now to get back my site. Should i change anyother settings?
please help
sorry guys... my link is working perfectly now. It just took some time....
ReplyDeleteI am not very adept at understanding all the instructions given. When I have purchased a Go Daddy domain name previously, I just went into Go Daddy and the domain name that I purchased and forwarded it to whatever site I wanted that domain name to redirect to. I did that with the blogger site I set up, but it does not redirect at all. I only get a blank screen when I put the domain name into the search bar. I am afraid to get way into all the above instructions in case I do something wrong and then will really be messed up. Can you help guide me, please. Thank you for any response.
ReplyDeleteHey team... nothing will go wrong... just follow the steps mentioned above... but have in mind that it will take maximum of 24 hours for the results...
ReplyDeleteTnx a lot for this post! Mine is working now.
ReplyDeleteHi Aneesh. Thanks for all the great tutorials! I am having a problem and hope that you can help. I had my blog redesigned, switched over to the custom domain bought through GoDaddy, but the navigation menu is not working properly. I went through this complete tutorial except for the Google Apps.
